The Cellstrom solar filling station is a device for charging electric vehicles purely from sunlight. Depending on the vehicle recharging can take from 2-8 hours. When the sun shines during the day solar panels convert the light to electricity. The panels consist of an array of 52m2 of solar panels (Solon Movers) mounted on a frame. The frame moves slowly throughout the day to track the position of the sun to capture the maximum amount of sun light. The Solon Movers are durable, use a well established technology and are expected to last for at least 20 years. Their life expectancy is further improved by their tilt mechanism which locks into storm position at the presence of high winds and can withstand winds of 150 km/h. The solar panels can also withstand hailstones of up to 2.8 cm diameter at 86 km/h.
The generated electricity is used by charging points for vehicles during the day. Excess energy is stored into a large battery, which may be used during the night to charge more vehicles plugged into the charging points. The battery used is based on vanadium redox flow technology which can undergo a very large number of daily cycles. The battery is manufactured with a sturdy weatherproof housing with all the necessary power and control electronics. With very little maintenance it is expected to have a lifetime of 20 years.
The charging points are electrical sockets that may be freely accessible or activated by manual keys, tokens or cards as required.
In practice any vehicle may be charged by the solar filling station, from golf carts to electric boats and sports cars and Vectrix scooters. Cellstrom will assist in determining and matching the right fleet with the right needs.
